Senior Events and Activities

On Tuesday, April 29th, Athol High School hosted the Early College Academy New Student Welcome and Orientation, bringing together students and their families to unlock their vast potential for a bright future. The evening commenced with an inspiring welcome address from Principal King, who encapsulated his remarks with "nothing comes by chance; the amount of effort, commitment, and dedication that you put into being an Early College student, will be the result you have earned." This thought-provoking quote set the tone for a night of boundless possibilities. Over dinner, distinguished student ambassadors, Emily King, Raydin Sousa, Hayden Barrieau, Logan Cormier, and Aaron Ouellet, shared invaluable insights and advice with incoming students and their families, exploring critical topics such as effective communication with professors, study habits, and navigating the transition from high school classes to college classes. The discussions culminated in a resounding message of empowerment, urging students to seize opportunities and reach their full potential. Students and their families then attended two informative breakout sessions, "Getting Started with Early College" and "Early College Expectations and Opportunities," expertly facilitated by Jaclyn Mickiewicz, AHS Class of 2027 Guidance Counselor, Thomas Shamgochian, AHS College and Career Coordinator, Erika Puccio, MWCC Early College Academic Counselor, and Fernando Garcia, Fitchburg State University Director of Early College. The overarching theme of the evening reinforced the importance of embracing opportunities, preparing for success, and staying committed to achieving excellence, echoing Thomas Edison's profound words, "We should remember that good fortune often happens when opportunity meets with preparation."

Financial literacy and effective money management have become increasingly prominent topics among Athol High School students. Recently, 65% of students surveyed expressed a strong desire to master these skills prior to graduation.
On Tuesday, March 25th, over twenty five Early College seniors from the class of 2025 participated in a bi-weekly college success seminar, where they engaged with Calla Flannery and Cat Comerford from Workers Credit Union. As Assistant Vice Presidents of Community & Business Development, Calla and Cat shared valuable insights on the advantages and disadvantages of banks, credit unions, and alternative savings methods.
During the presentation, students gained hands-on experience with writing checks and learned about the necessary documentation and requirements for opening a bank account. Additionally, they received guidance on taxes, withholdings, creditworthiness, selecting the optimal credit card, and interpreting pay stubs in an engaging and interactive environment. We extend our gratitude to Workers Credit Union, Calla Flannery, and Cat Comerford for delivering an informative presentation that addressed our students' request for enhanced financial literacy and money management skills.

Athol High School is excited to announce that eight of our juniors will be participating in Massachusetts' Boys and Girls State programs. Our students have been sponsored by the Athol American Legion, E H Phillips Post 102. Students participating in these intensive week-long programs will immerse themselves in grass roots democracy, studying responsible citizenship, government, and leadership through experiential learning. Students create and manage their own municipalities and work to understand how government functions. Athol High School sends a special thank you to William Wrigley and all those involved in supporting this fine group of AHS representatives.
