Science and Technology Department
Science and technology are more than academic subjects. They are ways of understanding the world, solving problems, creating solutions, and making informed decisions. At Athol High School, students engage in hands-on learning experiences that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation.
Our science courses are aligned to the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Standards, which are based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Engineering and biomedical science courses follow the nationally recognized Project Lead The Way (PLTW) curriculum. Computer science courses are aligned to the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) Standards, while Advanced Placement courses follow the College Board curriculum frameworks and prepare students for AP examinations. Across all programs, students develop technical knowledge and transferable skills that prepare them for college, careers, and lifelong learning.
Each course is organized around meaningful questions, real-world challenges, and authentic applications. Students investigate phenomena, analyze data, develop models, design solutions, write code, and communicate evidence-based conclusions. As they progress through the curriculum, students build a deeper understanding of scientific principles, engineering design, computational thinking, and mathematical reasoning while exploring the connections among STEM disciplines.
We invite students and families to explore how STEM learning develops throughout each course and across the high school program!

Thank you MultiScale Systems!!
Sheffield won the MultiScale Systems raffle at the Massachusetts Mash Up in September 2023 and was presented with a tool set by their CEO, Jesse Silverberg. Our engineering students are so thankful and have been putting it to good use!
