ARRSD Policy for Translation - Teachers

(September 2019)

It is federal law that families receive information from their children’s school in a language they can understand.  To that end, the district is implementing procedures for all communication with families who need translation.

Text:  Stakeholders needing Spanish language translation, they should e-mail their text in English to administrative assistant Gladys Torres, Email Gladys Torres.  Gladys will translate materials within 2 work days. (For instance , text received by Gladys on a Tuesday shall be translated and returned to teachers by Thursday of the same week.  Translation requests received after Tuesday will be ready the following week.) Gladys will route legal paperwork to Maria Pieropan for translation.

Oral translation:  Gladys Torres is available to attend meetings and make phone calls in Spanish as well.  Please request Gladys’s attendance 48 hours in advance.

Remember  this translation procedure is only for family communication and does not include school-work for the student.  Submitted text should fit on one page if possible so that the translation can go home on the back side of the same paper.

Gladys Torres will gather all translations in a shared Google Doc file and in an annual binder to use as a resource for future translations as well as evidence of the translation procedures in district.

For languages other than Spanish, the district will use a translation service to provide textual and oral translation. If textual translation or a translator is required in a language other than Spanish, please contact Beth Gospodarek.

Translation is a mandated civil right, and it is also the right thing to do.  It emboldens families to actively support kids while making connections within the schools.
