Mrs. Voutila’s kids “Read the World”

The first assignment each year, in our 5th grade ELA class, is to discuss the importance of reading.  Students are asked to bring in five items from home that they cannot use accurately unless they know how to read!  Students share the items with the class.

This year some items shared included: video game instructions from the top 500 boosters in overwatch, microwave popcorn, shampoo, birthday cards, sports catalogs, and a lot more!  Many students also talked about the things they could not carry in but still needed to know how to read to be able to understand what they were.  Their eyes were opened to a whole new world of reading!
