March Newsletter

March 3, 2014

I hope that everyone was able to enjoy some extra time with your children during our February vacation. It’s hard to believe that it is already the beginning of March and spring is just around the corner!

This month in math we will begin our unit on money. We will learn to identify and count coins. I will also be adding a few money games into our Friday math center stations. This will help reinforce the concept of money. It is also a good idea to let your child practice counting real money at home to help with coin identification.

In science this month we will be learning about our health and bodies. We will talk about our muscles and bones and how they help us move our bodies and help us to exercise. We will also talk about eating healthy foods and how they benefit our bodies and our teeth.

In reading we continue to read from our book bags and practice choosing books that are at your child’s reading level. We are also practicing how to do “turn and talks” which is discussing the book your child read with their partner and then reporting back to the class what they learned from their partner. This helps with listening and comprehension skills. Please try to have your child read at least 10-15 minutes every night to help build his/her fluency skills. We are not too far from heading into second grade now and the more reading your child does at home and in school the better reader he/she will become for second grade.

Please check in with my website occasionally to see what is happening in our classroom.
