February Newsletter

February 3, 2014

We have made it to the half way mark in first grade!! Last week was day 90 which is the midway point in the school year. The last half of the year will go by very quickly and before we know it, we will be talking about the end of the year.

On Friday, February 14 we will be having a small Valentine’s Day party in our classroom. Attached to this newsletter is a list of the students in our class. If your child chooses to bring in valentines please make sure each child on the list is included. This prevents any hurt feelings among the students. I will be looking for donations of food, drinks and paper items for our party. If you would like to send in an item, please write it in your child’s agenda. Please do not send any snacks with nuts. Thank you!

Report cards go home this Friday. Please keep the report card itself, but sign and return the envelope. If you should have any questions on your child’s report card, please do not hesitate to call me at the school or set up a conference.

This week we will be learning about Abraham Lincoln and next week we will learn about George Washington in honor of President’s Day. Don’t forget that we also have February vacation in two weeks!

We continue to do our 5 minute math test. I am very impressed with how well the students know their facts!! Most students have reached the 25 math fact goal and some have also reached the 50 and 75 math fact goal!! Congratulations to all of the students for doing such a great job reaching these goals!

We began our hardcover books last week in reading and our first reading test. Our story was Itsy Bitsy Spider and the students were able to act out parts of the story which they enjoyed very much. We are also introducing students to Readers Workshop where students pick books at their own reading level and spend a certain amount of time reading these books. This helps build fluency and comprehension and students have been looking forward to this individual reading time.

Dates To Remember

February 5 Half Day-Prof. Dev. Day

February 14 Valentine’s Day Party

February 17-21 Winter Break

Just a reminder to send in shoes if your child is wearing boots to school. Some children are forgetting their shoes and spend the day in hot, sweaty boots. Thank you!
